Civil Engineering — Ghana & West Africa
Road design, earthwork grading, site layout, culvert engineering, bridge supervision, and civil infrastructure delivery — from a base in Accra with project experience across Ghana and the United States.
Start Your ProjectGhana's infrastructure gap is well-documented — roads, drainage networks, bridges, and site services all require skilled civil engineers who understand both international design standards and the realities of West African construction. As a civil engineer based in Accra, I have delivered projects across Ghana's road network and municipal infrastructure, as well as large-scale stormwater and earthwork schemes in the United States.
My civil engineering practice spans roads and site layout, earthwork grading, culvert design, bridge construction oversight, and erosion protection. I carry work from desktop design through to on-site construction supervision, ensuring that design intent is faithfully realised in the field.
Road design across West Africa requires balancing geometric standards with terrain, drainage, and local traffic loading. I produce horizontal and vertical alignments, cross-sections, and grading plans using civil engineering software. My experience includes redesigning road alignments with new cross-sections and utility adjustments, as well as preparing cut-and-fill calculations for earthwork balance.
Accurate earthwork design is critical for cost control on civil contracts. I prepare site layout plans, grading plans, and cut-and-fill calculations that minimise haulage costs and ensure positive drainage across the site. For the N Clippert Street project in Lansing, Michigan, I redesigned the roadway grading, cross-sections, and utility adjustments as part of a large-scale drainage and environmental improvement programme.
Culverts are a critical link in the road drainage chain, and under-sized culverts are a leading cause of road failure across Ghana. I design culverts — box, pipe, and arch types — by calculating design flows from catchment runoff analysis, sizing openings to pass the design storm, and detailing headwalls and aprons to control erosion. I have experience designing road crossing culverts in Accra using reinforced concrete box culvert sections to meet hydraulic requirements.
During my tenure at Broad Consult Ltd, I was embedded in the Czech Modular Steel Bridge programme — constructing nine modular steel bridges across rural and trunk roads in Ghana. My role covered construction supervision, substructure and superstructure inspection, compliance with manufacturer specifications, and resolution of site engineering issues. I also conducted bridge inventories and condition surveys for selected structures on Ghana's trunk road network.
Uncontrolled erosion undermines roads, bridges, and drainage channels across West Africa. I design erosion control measures — riprap armoring, gabion structures, and vegetation stabilisation — and review contractor submittals to verify correct implementation. This work is critical at bridge abutments and river crossings where scour during flood events can be catastrophic.
